Although IB allows for search and retrieval to transcend the bounds of records, objects are indexed as records. Each record contains its own metadata:
- Date (typically filled from a field or content in the input record)
- Date Record created (typically the file creation date of the input)
- Date record last modified
- Date record expires (after which, things in it should no longer be found and the record not appear in results)
- Key (each record has a unique key)
- Path and filename: Where to locate the record
- Path and filename (where its input located in the host filesystem), also its starting and ending position within the file
- Locale (language and character set encoding)
- Category (an integer classification system)
- Priority (a ranking of important of the records)
